VoIP technology is on the move. As it continues to draw popularity new products and services are continually flooding consumers...

VoIP technology is on the move. As it continues to draw popularity new products and services are continually flooding consumers. Some of these products are hitting customers before rules and regulations can even be initiated for the technology as a whole. Yet VoIP continues to rise, and due to its wonderful cost efficiency remains a viable force in the telecommunications arena.

Some products and services applicable to VoIP technology are:

Instant Messaging with VoIP

Instant Messaging programs are embracing VoIP technology. The greatest advantage to Instant Messaging VoIP is that it remains one of the free VoIP products on the market. Simply visit your favorite Instant Messaging site and check for any new products labeled, “with voice” or “voice enabled” or “make phone calls”. All of this refers to VoIP. Programs such as Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, and MSN all enable VoIP capabilities. Even Google has designed a new Instant Messaging- VoIP product.

We will continue to see the evolution of VoIP enabled products and services as this high demand technology continues to gain strength and momentum.

VoIP Service Providers for Telephone Needs

There are many new providers on the market that will supply your telecommunications needs. Many of the providers will offer you services and features that are normally included in your landline telephone services. Unlike standard telephone providers, these features are often included for free with your VoIP service.

Because VoIP integrates many different technologies such as data, audio, video, and web applications you can benefit from the services provided with VoIP. Features such as Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Call Transferring, Voicemail, Do Not Disturb, and the ability to transfer your phone number are all included with your VoIP service. You will need to check with your individual VoIP service provider to find out what specific features are included with your service of choice.

Another feature included with many VoIP service providers is the ability to choose your area code. You may select from any area code within the United States, and some providers offer the ability to select an area code from other countries.

This has many benefits for residential users and small businesses as well. If you have a lot of friends and family in a certain region, you can select an area code from their region, and they will be able to call you with local rates and not long distance rates.

For small businesses the ability to choose a specific area code is advantageous because they can use that phone number to attract business in certain locations.

E911

Another new feature for VoIP users is the E-911 or Enhanced 911 program. Many users have had trouble in the past calling 911 from VoIP connections.

Because VoIP utilizes a broadband Internet connection and not a standard landline, the Public Safety Answering Point Dispatcher does not readily see addresses and other important information; the FCC has instituted some rules and regulations regarding VoIP and 911.

To begin with, when purchasing VoIP services, you will be required to sign a statement that says you understand that your 911 services may be impaired by using VoIP. Some VoIP providers do not offer 911 services at all.

Other providers will offer what is known as Enhanced 911. To use E-911 services, you may be required to first activate the 911 services. The most efficient way to use E-911 is to register your information with the Public Safety Answering system.

They will take your name and physical address. That way, if you call 911, they won’t have your information readily available, but they will have it in their system. However, if you are out or away from your residence and call 911, your information will be useless. In a situation like that, you will need to clearly state your location. Your VoWiFi phone won’t reveal any of your local information, as a cellular phone will.

VoWi Fi Phones

Another product on the VoIP market today is the VoWi Fi phone. These are wireless phones that run on a VoIP network. They are fairly new to the market and are currently more expensive than the cost of a cellular phone. Though many major telephone companies such as Sprint, Vonage, and Verizon are creating VoWi Fi or hybrid- half Cellular half VoWi Fi phones.

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is the ability to transmit voice over the Internet and to either a receiving computer or telephone...

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is the ability to transmit voice over the Internet and to either a receiving computer or telephone. VoIP works by what is referred to as the Packet Switching Network. Standard landline telephones use the Circuit Switching Network. The entire landline telephone system is known as the Public Switched Telephone Network.

The main difference between Packet Switching and Circuit Switching, is that Packet Switching uses (data) or Packets and sends them over the Internet while Circuit Switching is accomplished by using electrical circuits to make a telephone connection.

Circuit Switching is like the old switchboard operators, wearing headsets frantically trying to connect the right caller with the receiver. Packet Switching is used to transfer data all across the Internet- it is used for E-mail.

Packet Switching converts audio formats into data packets and transmits them over the Internet, then reassembles them on the other person’s phone or computer in real time.

By using a High Speed Internet Connection, a microphone, and speakers a conversation can take place that is comparable to any landline telephone conversation.

VoIP technology is not relatively new; it is just becoming increasingly popular. During the latter part of the 1990’s, programs were springing up across the Internet offering some form of free VoIP technology.

Most of those are either no longer existent or now charge a standard monthly service fee for the use of their product. But one thing remains certain, VoIP is developing higher standards of quality every day, and it has proved that it is a viable force for telecommunication needs for the future.

Many telephone companies are expanding to allow for monthly VoIP services. Companies such as Sprint, Verizon, and AOL are offering VoIP plans.

Instant Messaging programs have been utilizing the science of VoIP technology for years. Now, most Instant Messaging programs come with “voice” enabled features.

These features allow you to call a member of your buddy list. By using a microphone and speakers, you will be able to converse anywhere in the world, by VoIP and your Instant Messaging program.

VoIP is prized for its ability to integrate many forms of telecommunication applications into one package. VoIP can handle data, audio, video, E-Mail, and web based applications simultaneously. This makes VoIP an incredible boost to businesses. It also is s a cost effective choice of telephone service.

Instant Messaging is a perfect example of how VoIP incorporates different areas into one program.

With your voice enabled Instant Messaging program, you can hook up a digital camera or a web cam and use video, while you are speaking with your buddy on your microphone and listening to them with your speakers, and you can type back and forth with your chat program.

You could also write an email while you are doing all of these other tasks at the same time. The potential for VoIP’S use is nearly limitless.

VoIP telephone service providers are increasing in popularity as well.

Many people are discovering all of the benefits available to them by switching to VoIP. First, VoIP costs significantly less than standard telephone service, and this is a great attraction for bringing in new customers.

Many VoIP service plans will let you make unlimited long distance calls or provide you with a plan for very inexpensive rates.

Many of the features that are often included for a fee with traditional phone service are often included for free with VoIP services. These include features such as Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Call Block, Three-Way- Calling, Voice Mail, and more.

Another benefit to VoIP services include the fact that many providers will let you keep your existing phone number, or allow you to select a new area code. Selecting a new area code has great appeal to many people. For instance, a customer can select an area code for the same town where most of his friends or family live.

By choosing this area code, not only is he still getting a great deal with his VoIP services, but also now his family and friends will save money whenever they call. For them, it will be a local and not a long distance call.

VoIP has proved that it is a viable force in the field of telecommunications, we can be sure that VoIP is here to stay.

Sprint Wireless made a headline in one of the famous newspapers in the United States for providing credit to their business clients for break in its network all over the country...

Sprint Wireless made a headline in one of the famous newspapers in the United States for providing credit to their business clients for break in its network all over the country. The said break was described as quick busy signals, dropped calls and other slight trouble. However, compared to its competitors, Sprint Wireless made a daring offering of a reimbursement for such troubles.

Because of this, clients are receiving approximately 30 percent savings in their Sprint Wireless bills every month.

Such loyalty in servicing the clients is a great contribution to Sprint Wireless.

This is the reason why they are considered as one of the top wireless providers in the U.S. Sprint Wireless is tagged the number 4 phone carrier in the entire United States with about 20 million subscribers.

However, despite of its being on the top, Sprint Wireless has one thing in common to the other phone carriers. It is their interest in developing their network design for it to be a lot helpful to some of the most challenging clients.

Sprint Wireless has a complete line of cell phones and calling plans which has different prices and offerings which greatly help the Sprint Wireless to reach their objective.

The plan of Sprint ranges from 35 dollars per month for the basic plan to the comprehensive plan that is below 100 dollars monthly.

For example, one plan of the Sprint Wireless that is good at 35 dollars per month will give a customer about 300 peak minutes and limitless nights and weekends with coverage all over the country.

The rate and strength of the coverage differs in top cities. Sprint Wireless also offers a family plan with a rate of 128 dollars per month.

This plan provides 700 shared minutes and limitless nights and weekends with nationwide coverage. If you are planning to have an additional line, you will pay 20 dollars monthly for the extra.

Free and Clear is one of the Sprint Wireless famous plans. This plan is ideal to those people who seldom travel outside their service area.

This plan also gives 1000 peak minutes and limitless nights and weekends use. If you take a trip on an area not covered by your calling area, you can just prefer this 1000 plan of Sprint Wireless at about 80 dollars monthly.

You can select a plan with 1000 peak minutes and limitless use on nights and weekends. If not, you can also choose the 3000 any time minutes which usually involve the use during the night and weekend.

Have a glance at the PM6625 of the Sprint Wireless. This is a complete phone which is already available at any part of the country.

The PM6625 has features such as the VGA camera, complete personalization capability and it also has an infrared Port.

Some phones of Sprint Wireless also have a camera, user-friendly and can be personalized by using the ringtones of the Sprint.

They are usually small and light-weighted. Other Sprint Wireless phones, on the other hand, have features like speaker phone, and Palm OS. However, most of them are expensive.

Just imagine how great Sprint Wireless is. Besides the phones that they offer to their customers, they are also on top when it comes to customer service.

That is why it is not surprising if they are considered as one of the best in the U.S.

Bandwidth is a term that has several different meanings depending on the context...

Bandwidth is a term that has several different meanings depending on the context. When talking about bandwidth in terms of Web Hosting it refers to the amount of data that transfers into and out of your web hosting account. Incoming data can include requests for web pages, email, FTP requests, and FTP uploads, while outgoing data includes file transfers, web pages, and email.

Each hosting account is allocated a certain amount of bandwidth per month. Common figures for bandwidth range from 3 GB for small personal sites up to 200 GB for large business systems.

How much bandwidth do you need? This depends on the amount of traffic your website receives as well as the content.

Web pages made up of text and a few pictures are very small in size but if you get thousands of visitors each day you may need a lot of bandwidth.

On the other hand website content consisting of downloadable files such as software, music or video is much larger in size, so even if your traffic is fairly low you may need extra bandwidth.

The best way to calculate the amount of bandwidth you need is to calculate the size of your downloadable content and multiply by the number of visitors you receive each month. Add to that the number of emails sent and received and other content such as FTP uploads.

The figure you come up with should be pretty accurate because it is unlikely that every visitor to your site is going to download every file or view every page. This will give you a bit of margin to play with.

As your web site grows and as you receive more traffic you may have to increase your bandwidth allotment accordingly. It is better to plan ahead and arrange with your web host for a larger hosting package rather than wait until you go over your limit.

Check with your host to see what their policy is in regards to exceeding your bandwidth. Some will allow you to go over by a certain amount while others will shut down your site and demand that you upgrade your account before resuming service.

It is always best to keep track of how much bandwidth you are using and anticipate when you need to upgrade.

If you feel that you have sufficient bandwidth and would prefer not to upgrade you may be able to 'throttle' traffic if you are approaching your monthly limit.

Some hosts offer this service as a way to limit incoming requests or to exclude requests once a certain number has been reached.

There are several throttling options. You can limit the number of incoming requests by specifying an idle time between requests.

This causes incoming requests to be delayed by a specified amount of time if too many are arriving at once. Other options are to impose a limit on data transfer within a certain time period or to limit the number of requests for a certain file.

The speed of transfers can also be capped at a certain level. Throttling may not be a good idea if you depend on web traffic for your business.

If your pages are slow to load or if users can't access files they are looking for they may give up and move on to another site.

If you have a lot of free content, though, throttling can be useful for keeping your hosting budget within a certain amount.

Before you decide to go wireless or not, there are many points to consider. You may be asking yourself if wireless is for you. Well, today, many people are asking themselves the same question. If you watch the headline news, you are bound to see stories involving mergers, federal regulations, and new tax rules. This all points to the fact that VoIP has made a definite impression on American citizens and is here to stay.

It may be difficult for some people to remove the telephone cords from their homes; we have depended on them for over 100 years.

But once many people take the time to weigh the pros and the cons, most choose to go wireless. Here are some reasons, why you should make the switch to wireless.

1 - Wireless Creates a Faster Network

Wireless networks are fast. With VoIP, you can create a network that incorporates data, audio, video, and computer web features.

You can easily monitor your network for problems and troubleshooting is much simpler with web based applications rather than hardware applications.

VoIP uses less bandwidth than other applications and this in the long run saves money. This is of special value to businesses.

Businesses can also provide better customer service with integrated programs. Not only does this increase productivity, but also it saves time and money in the long run.

2 - VoIP Saves You Money

Overall, VoIP is much more inexpensive then PSTN. You simply pay for your Internet service, and then whichever VoIP provider you choose.

For a one time monthly fee, you can have unlimited local and long distance phone calls. You will need to check with the VoIP service provider that you choose for exact details on their rates.

Sometimes, your VoIP service provider will allow free calls within the world to another computer, yet there may be a fee for calls worldwide to a landline phone. Always check with your chosen service provider for exact details regarding your chosen plan. Included in many VoIP service plans are free features.

These features include Voicemail, Caller ID, Call Waiting, Do Not Disturb, and more. Again, check with your chosen service provider for an overview of all the features bundled with your plan. The biggest benefit is the unlimited long distance calling.

This has proven to be the number one reason why most businesses are switching to VoIP. For businesses such as sales or jobs that have mobile employees, these benefits go without saying. But overall, the average cost of VoIP is considerably less when compared to the cost of PSTN.

3 - VoIP Enables you to Talk with More than One Person at a Time

With VoIP, you can talk with more than one person without paying extra for services such as three way calling.

With VoIP you can have more than three people on the phone at once.

VoIP is the perfect solution for those who want to explore the features of conference calls. This is very important for businesses that have employees overseas.

By using the video conferencing features, employers will increase their productivity.

4 - Enjoy Greater Flexibility

By using VoIP, you can take your VoIP equipment with you whenever you travel.

Your VoIP service provider will send you a converter that will allow you to use your converter with any standard telephone. The converter comes programmed with your telephone number, allowing you to take your phone and phone number with you worldwide.

All you will need is a high speed Internet connection and you can use your VoIP phone service. This is of extreme benefit to mobile employees.

No longer are outdated telecommunications systems necessary, or are employees trying to run businesses on prepaid cell phone plans.

By using VoIP, an employee will have access to his/her phone number, wherever they are located.

Whether out of state, in a hotel, or traveling on a business trip, customers will be able to call the same number as well as leave voice mail on the employee’s computer.

5 - You can Save Money for Family and Friends by Choosing Your Area Code

Many VoIP service providers will give you the option of selecting your own area code number.

This is a tremendous benefit to family and friend members who can call you locally, if you select the same area code number.

British Sky Broadcasting on Wednesday reported interim profits down by nearly 9 per cent – better than analysts had been expecting – as it absorbed the costs of setting up its broadband service.

Pre-tax profits dropped by 8.7 per cent at £356m, while revenues increased by 10 per cent to £2.22bn.

BSkyB said year-on year profit growth in the first half had been affected by a substantially weaker TV advertising sector, continued decline in cable wholesale revenue and high levels of new customers and upgrades, which led to higher short-term costs.

James Murdoch, chief executive, said: “In 2007, we will continue to drive towards our goal of being the leader in entertainment and communications in the UK and Ireland. We’re on track for our targets and our expansion into broadband and telephony positions us well to take advantage of a growing opportunity in a £20bn industry.”

Mr Murdoch added that the expansion into the UK broadband and telephony sectors had got off to a good start, saying it had signed up 259,000 broadband customers by January 28. High definition television subscribers nearly doubled in the second quarter to 184,000.

The number of broadband subscribers opting for paid-for services had exceeded expectations, with 70 per cent opting for the paid-for products. Mr Murdoch added that 20 per cent of its broadband customers were new to Sky.

But the underlying subscriber “churn” rate - which measures the rate at which subscribers leave - rose quarter on quarter to 11.9 per cent, with the number of customers leaving Sky’s platform during the quarter reaching 27,000. Mr Murdoch said that the company faced “a few quarters of adjustment” as it reduced package discounts. He added that the underlying rate was 10.6 per cent and that he “didn’t see any reason” why the company could not get this rate down to 10 per cent.

Simon Wallis of Collins Stewart said: “The Christmas period should actually be a seasonally low period for churn and with Sky’s subscriber base reaching 8.4m it is an increasingly critical variable to Sky’s valuation. Shareholders had better hope this increase in churn is temporary. ”

Operating costs excluding programming were up 36 per cent at £1.08bn. Marketing costs rose by £43m to £375m, while subscriber management costs rose by £94m, or £66m on a like-for-like basis, to £313m. Other operating expenses rose by £148m to £389m, which included £124m of Sky Broadband and Easynet Enterprise cost.

Operating profit dipped 4.6 per cent to £395m. Earnings per share for the six months ended December 31 were 14p compared with 14.9p last time.

The interim dividend increased by 20 per cent to 6.6p per share. BSkyB shares dipped 5½p to 539½p in early London trading.

MPs are ratcheting up the pressure on the government to intervene over BSkyB’s recent move to take a stake in commercial broadcaster ITV. An announcement by Alistair Darling, trade and industry secretary, on whether the government will exercise its power to overrule regulators on the deal – originally expected last week – will not now be made before next week, officials said.

Nobody could have predicted the Internet and how much the world would embrace it, not only for entertainment, but also for commerce and even social interaction...

Nobody could have predicted the Internet and how much the world would embrace it, not only for entertainment, but also for commerce and even social interaction.

Not even Nostradamus, who has descriptions of numerous future technologies like helicopters and tanks, mentions the Internet anywhere in his quatrains. There are probably more people with email addresses than there are people with telephones.

Our experience online is always dependent on the speed of our access. Most of us probably had our first experience online through dial-up access, using a telephone line and a modem.

The fastest these modems can go is 56Kbps (Kilo bits per second) and is mostly adequate for E-mails and regular browsing. The popularity of the Web however has spurred new forms applications and features that make dial-up access almost unbearable.

Because of these new applications and features, high-speed access is now in big demand and broadband has proven to be the popular choice.

Broadband is the common term used for the technology that provides speeds that is at least 10x that of dial-up. In fact, broadband today refers to speeds in the Mbps (Mega bit per second).

And the most common broadband options today are mostly over the wire, like DSL and Cable, using the existing telephone line and cable that already goes into every home.

If you are unlucky enough to be situated in an area where wired broadband services are not available, not to worry because wireless broadband has come of age. These wireless broadband services are available as fixed wireless solutions or as a mobile solution.

Fixed wireless broadband refers to systems that are situated in fixed locations such as at the office or at home. Without having to layout cables or wires, fixed wireless broadband is easily deployable in remote areas as a "last mile" solution.

With wireless technology now widely available to consumers, it is not as prohibitive to implement as before when large cumbersome antenna or microwave dishes were used.

Most common fixed wireless solutions for companies and home users are the Private Unlicensed Link (Spread Spectrum) and Satellite Systems:

• Spread spectrum is a popular choice because the standards have matured a lot to an extent that a lot of vendors now offer devices supporting this technology at an affordable price. Commonly known as WiFi, this wireless broadband offers a speed of 10Mbps up to 54Mbps.

• Satellites themselves may not be fixed, since they are orbiting above the earth, but the receiving stations are. With speeds ranging from 56Kbps to 155Mbps, this is one solution not commonly for home users but more for the corporate sector.

Although, a Satellite link carries with it the inherent delay that the signal has to travel from earth to the orbiting satellite, usually about a quarter of a second.

For a single user, there are also wireless access solutions available through mobile phone providers.

Mobile broadband services become available as 3G technology is adopted in countries around the world. With 3G (Third Generation) high speed services, mobile broadband can reach a maximum of 1.4Mbps. Limitations of course are in the coverage of the signal.

The Internet has continually changed over the years from its humble beginnings of being a simple communication tool to being today's ubiquitous cyberspace we all know and love. And with wireless broadband, the Internet can now be accessed anytime and anywhere.

BSkyB is upping the ante in the broadband price war amid concerns that growth among top- spending customers is stalling...

BSkyB is upping the ante in the broadband price war amid concerns that growth among top- spending customers is stalling.

The satellite giant is slashing the price of internet access for 20% of British households that have yet to be hooked up to its new network.

Sky will charge £5 a month for its mid-speed broadband package - down from £17 for many homes that aren't yet within the range of BT telephone exchanges.

The move comes as Dresdner Kleinwort raised fears that Sky's premium subscriber growth has stalled at a total of less than 6m households.

But despite increased competition this year from a revitalised NTL and BT's TV push, Sky boss James Murdoch is oozing confidence about the prospects for 2007.

'I would say we are more confident every day with our short, medium and long term prospects,' he said.

But he stopped short of raising the company's target of 10m customers by 2010.

Sky will begin heavy marketing of a See, Speak, Surf £26-a-month package for broadband, phone calls and television.

The deal excludes sport and film channels and an £11 line rental fee for BT comes on top.

UK broadband speed varies widely across the country. The differences are based upon the location, type of broadband and the service providers, themselves.

Speed is based upon connection, download and upload of information. Speed also varies based upon individual factors. All the factors come together to help give a rough estimate of the overall UK broadband speed.

The following list explains all of the factors that goes into the final result of broadband speed.

- Type of Broadband. There are numerous types of broadband connections. ADSL and cable are the fastest. Other types like satellite are slower, but still faster than dial up. Even at the slowest rate broadband is still at least 10 times faster than dial up connections.

- Service provider. Some service providers can supply higher speeds. This can be due to better technology, equipment or location. Each provider will list their tops speeds for subscribers to see and this is an easy way for a person to ensure they are getting the best speed possible.

- Web Traffic. The internet is often referred to as the information highway. The reason for this is that all the information online travels through lines that work much like an actual highway. When there are a lot of people online these lines get crowded and the internet runs slower than usual. These times are referred to as peak hours. Peak hours usually occur after 7 am until 9 pm on weekdays and all weekend.

- Hardware. Hardware a person uses, from modems to cables can effect the internet speed. If a person is using outdated or damaged hardware then this will effect the efficiency and in the end, the speed of the connection.

- Personal computer. It is up to the individual to make sure that they keep their computer running smoothly. Each person should make sure that they clean their web browsers history, temporary files and cookies on a regular basis. This helps the computer to be able to work quicker. Also older computers do not have as much memory and therefore need to be cleaned more often so the internet can run quickly.

These four factors all come together to make broadband speed hard to pinpoint. One location could get greatly different results than another simply because of the varying factors.

When looking at UK broadband access speeds and all the factors that can effect them it is easy to see why it providers can not guarantee a speed.

Many providers give a range of speed where the connection speed will fall.

Most users will rarely, if ever, get the top speeds, due to the factors above. Even someone will the best equipment, location and service may not see the top speeds because some factors, like web traffic, can not be controlled by anyone.
